A History of Personalysis
Personalysis Corporation has consulted with national and international companies to achieve higher productivity and performance for more than thirty years. The founder of Personalysis, James R. Noland, is a behavioral scientist who specializes in management and organizational behavior. He was educated at Emory University, received graduate degrees from Yale University and New York University, and worked with the New York Institute for Psychological Research.
While serving as a faculty member of the College of Business Administration at the University of Houston, he became acutely aware that personality was more important than superior academic performance as the best predictor of success in the world of business. He researched a wide array of sociological and psychological theories, tested important behavioral science principles, and developed the Personalysis Questionnaire and Report for use in the world of work. Personalysis integrates and updates the concepts of Berne, Freud, Jung, Maslow, and other behavioral science themes.
Since 1975, organizations have used Personalysis to provide the insights and skills that can readily be applied toward greater productivity. Personalysis Corporation believes that all individuals want to grow. Growth permits individuals to find meaning in life and to achieve their potential, both personally and professionally. Companies grow when the needs, expectations, and aspirations of the people who make up the organization are addressed. By linking personal values and organizational goals, work becomes meaningful and productive.
The Personalysis System
What is Personalysis?
Personalysis identifies the most productive way for you to operate. It clearly defines how you can reach and maintain peak performance by recognizing areas of your personality on which you can capitalize and those that stymie your growth potential. Your Personalysis Report includes color-coded graphics which provide a visual representation of your personality, and your Personalysis Colorgraph furnishes a map of your personality.
Personalysis gives information about characteristics which affect job performance and productivity. This includes how you:
- Set goals;
- Implement job tasks;
- Supervise and accept supervision;
- Make and implement decisions;
- Communicate with others;
- Expect others to communicate with you; and
- Deal with change and develop trust.
What does Personalysis do?
Personalysis provides neutral, descriptive, nonevaluative, and nonjudgmental information about individuals. It empowers them to be more self-aware and better manage themselves and others. To achieve this goal, Personalysis addresses three areas that have a direct impact on productivity: personal, interpersonal, and group effectiveness.
Personal effectiveness is increased by using Personalysis to identify:
- Your strengths and ways to maximize those strengths;
- Your limitations and ways to remove or deal with limitations; and
- Strategies for you to handle stress and prevent your being distressed and negative.
Interpersonal effectiveness is strengthened by using Personalysis to:
- Recognize how your personal style affects others;
- Understand how the styles of others affect you; and
- Develop strategies to communicate and work effectively with people who have different styles.
Group effectiveness is elevated by using Personalysis with groups to:
- Plan and function together more productively;
- Visualize the effect each member has on the productivity of the group; and
- Comprehend group norms which affect interaction and commitments.
Personalysis as a leadership tool.
Leaders use Personalysis to identify areas of compatibility and differences. The methodology, language, and graphics of Personalysis help them to develop productive ways to communicate and work.
By helping associates and their leaders understand the value of diverse traits, work styles, and perspectives, Personalysis minimizes conflict. When conflicts do arise, the nonthreatening language of Personalysis enables associates to understand the causes behind the conflict and to create cooperative strategies for resolution.
Personalysis as a change-management tool.
Business changes can create problems within your organization. Personalysis helps minimize the negative consequences of change on employees and the organization by:
- Identifying how each associate will respond to change;
- Providing constructive ways to address concerns to build trust and ensure commitment; and
- Explaining ways to involve associates in the change process.
Personalysis as a performance-appraisal tool.
Personalysis provides information to help leaders and associates produce more objective performance appraisals, particularly as personality relates to the manner and quality of performance. It enables a leader to appraise the unique strengths and work styles of associates as they apply to expectations of job performance. It provides an objective way of evaluating others without appraiser prejudice.
Personalysis helps to identify areas where an individual may have difficulty in a job. It also indicates how a leader’s style might adversely affect an associate’s willingness to perform. When both views are considered, a developmental plan can be created to increase the associate’s job performance and satisfaction.
Personalysis as a teambuilding tool.
Multisite locations; short-term projects; communication via technology; rapid on-boarding; and global, multicultural, widely dispersed teams demand new ways of building teams. Personalysis identifies each individual’s expectations and requirements for developing trust. A composite of the team—visually displayed through the Group Dynamics Profile—eliminates the disadvantage of distance and makes obvious the team’s strengths and potential vulnerabilities and spots the opportunities to leverage strengths.
Personalysis as a diversity tool.
Existing differences such as gender, race, religion, culture, and language are apparent in the workplace. What is not as visible is the diversity of emotional perspectives. These dictate how individuals learn, respond to change, and make decisions. By embracing the emotional diversity within the organization, people communicate more effectively, accept divergent points of view, and proactively support each other to pull together as a high-performing team. Personalysis facilitates this accomplishment.
Personalysis as a selection and placement tool.
As a valuable selection tool, Personalysis is used to compare an applicant’s style with the requirements of a specific job. By anticipating potential problems in relationships and performance expectations, it serves to guide new employees’ transitions into the organization and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
By understanding the value of diverse traits, work styles, and perspectives, Personalysis assists in placement. It also helps to identify team strengths and potential limitations which may adversely affect productivity and create blind sides. Personalysis optimizes placement of people in areas where their strengths are required to maximize productivity.
It is important to note that Personalysis does not measure job skills, education, experience, intelligence, or character. These important elements have a strong influence on job performance. Personalysis Corporation recommends that these factors always be considered in addition to personality appraisal in any job selection or placement.
Personalysis as an executive-development tool.
Following Socrates’ dictum “Know thyself” forms the core curriculum for the lifelong class of “Executive Leadership 101.” Qualities and abilities of knowing oneself and looking within include:
- A desire to be more effective personally and publicly;
- A knowledge of one’s strengths and weaknesses;
- A way of obtaining candid feedback about one’s own behavior; and
- An action plan.
Personalysis provides objective data to help you know and further develop “self.” By identifying personal biases, defensiveness, differences in learning, motivation, and trust development, you can embrace and apply developmental feedback. Then you can better explain your vision and work with others to make it happen.
Personalysis as an organizational-development tool.
There is universal agreement that building a productive corporate culture and optimizing organizational effectiveness are worthwhile goals. However, many companies struggle to find an integrative vehicle for developing the organization. Personalysis unites every aspect of managing people and supports the creation of effective, high-performing organizations. The applications of Personalysis become the cultural touchstone.
